New traffic lights in Road Town

Finally managed to get a dusk to dark transition ride in.  Started at 6pm just as it was getting dark and rode until 9pm.

I have been meaning to check out the traffic during our rush hour to see how many red lights I would encounter, unfortunately my fears were confirmed…I only got one green light which came at the very end of this 3 hour session. I managed to cover just over 65km in the allotted 2 hours 45 minutes, but due to the lights and busy roundabouts I had to keep my forward pace at 32-34 km/h.

While out there I also met the gentleman who paints all the road markings in the BVI and he informed me that as of this Friday there will be the additional 2 new lights to contend with. The traffic’s behavior was about what I expected and with safe defensive driving I am confident I can keep an OK pace during the same time period on Saturday the 12th.

My gut feeling is that I will have to use the group of riders with me at the start to hammer out a pace until around 5pm, then when we get into the witching hours we will have to relax our speed, ride safely, eat a lot and maybe take alternate breaks.  At around midnight with fresh riders I will then have to step on the gas to make up for lost ground.

The objective is still very obtainable even with the additional lights…it will just have to be a little more methodical.
