To raise a funding shortfall of $50,000 Chris Ghiorse will be riding for 24 hours with the goal of covering 500km in that period to the fill the gap and ensure that the programme runs in all the schools for 2011/2012.

The ride will take place on the weekend of November 12/13 starting at 12 noon on Saturday and finishing on Sunday at 12 noon. The course will be laps of the Sir Francis Drake Highway between Port Purcell roundabout and the main roundabout in the Road Town. In keeping with the principles of BSAFE, all road regulations will be observed throughout the ride.

The BSAFE 24/500 HQ will be at the entrance to the Recreation Ground where there will be rest stops and the support team.

BSAFE aims to provide all children free safety awareness and fitness education. BSAFE uses bicycles as the tool to teach these valuable life lessons to children. BSAFE surveyed Althea Scatliffe Class 4 and 5 students (202 were present on the day of the survey) and found that 95% (191) of these students would like to participate in what BSAFE can offer them. In 3 years BSAFE has:

Graduated over 700 students in the Level 1 course with ages ranging from 8 to 11

Taught over 250 children on Learn to Ride weekends with ages ranging from 3 to 14

BSAFE has given away over $40,000 worth of equipment in the form of bikes, helmets, t-shirts and bottles.

In 24 hours, Chris plans to cover 500km which is the equivalent to cycling to Dominica from Tortola. In this time, Chris will:

  • burn 15,000 calories - a mere 12 Double Quarter Pounders with cheese and large fries from McDonalds will replace those calories
  • potentially stop at 560 red lights
  • pedal 100,000 strokes
  • drink 37.85 litres (10 gallons) of water
  • cycle 140 laps of Road Town, Tortola
